ACM Multimedia 2015 Student Symposium Highlights Future Multimedia Research Potential
The mission of the ACM Multimedia student symposium is to give the young talent in our community the opportunity to interact with senior researchers, to give them valuable feedback and encouragement to succeed, and to provide a sense of community and appreciation. At ACM Multimedia 2015 in Brisbane we revamped the organization of the session to further strengthen this mission. It turned out to be a very successful event, including presence of more than 45 people, including selected students, sponsors, and senior members.
After a few words of introduction by SIGMM Chair Shih-Fu Chang and this year’s symposium chairs, the symposium started with a joint lunch, sponsored by SIGMM, with people mixed on different tables, so interaction between students, sponsors and seniors happened naturally. Rather than having each student present her or his work with an oral presentation, the session was designed as an interactive poster session where the students could present and highlight their work. A number of reviewers were asked to act as mentor and to engage in an in-depth technical discussion with ‘their’ students. More than 30 students receiving travel grants to present their papers at ACMMM were invited to attend this event. In addition, eight students showcased their doctoral thesis work during the interactive poster session.
Sponsors from industry, government and academia provided feedback on the students’ work, enjoyed the science and learned from the proposed solutions. We also invited all students who received a travel grant, so that they could learn what it takes to be a future student symposium presenter. This setup worked out really well, and it became a very lively session. The students got the special treatment they deserve, the sponsors were recognized and the travel grantees potentially want to be a symposium student in the future. We plan to continue the same arrangement this coming year at ACM Multimedia in Amsterdam.
The ACM Multimedia 2015 Organising Committee would like to acknowledge the generous support for the Student Symposium from US National Science Foundation and SIGMM.
